Ake Sjoholm

University of South Alabama
USA View Profile

Research Interest:
Professor Sjöholms research aims to clarify the molecular pathways that regulate insulin secretion, growth and death by the insulin-producing pancreatic islet β-cell, and why this goes awry in diabetes. More recently, in an effort to enhance endogenous production of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), he has applied the same approach to study GLP-1-producing enteroendocrine L-cells. Another line of his research concerns translational and clinical studies of macrovascular complications of diabetes (myocardial infarction and stroke) with specific attention to pathogenic factors and therapeutic possibilities. His group was the first to show that GLP-1 ameliorates endothelial dysfunction in diabetic patients with stable coronary artery disease. He has since pursued these tracks mechanistically in animal models and in human coronary artery endothelial cells in vitro.

Profile:
Ake Sjoholm is Adjunct Professor, College of Medicine, University of South Alabama, AL, U.S.A. (since 2003) and is also board-certified senior clinical consultant in internal medicine (since 1998). He has been active in experimental and clinical diabetes research for the past 30 years. He has published some 150 full papers in top international journals (Lancet, Science, PNAS, JBC, Diabetes, JCI, etc.) in this area and has received several national and international diabetes awards. He has been the chief supervisor of 10 completed Ph.D. programs.
