As a profoundly deaf individual, he utilizes a cochlear implant and assistive devices for communication. He speaks on issues relative to mental health, education, motivation, and hearing impairment. In 1994 he was honored with the hearing health industry’s highest worldwide recognition, the Joel S. Wernick Excellence in Education Award. He holds six advanced degrees, and is one of the most published authors in the healthcare field, with his work featured on more than 22,000 websites today. He serves on committees and advisory positions in the International Hearing Society, Society of Behavioral Medicine, World Congress of Positive Psychology, American Tinnitus Association, Better Hearing Institute, and Audiology Online. He also played professionally on the saxophone and clarinet in several symphony orchestras and jazz bands, and has made a number of recordings over the years. He just returned from Japan where he was featured soloist on a national program, the first profoundly deaf individual in history known for such a feat. He includes a live concert of some of his astounding music on some of his lecture assignments, which demonstrate the power of music in overcoming the communicative and cognitive barriers presented by profound deafness.

The first in the city, he performed a successful operation with esophageal atresia, the first thoracoscopic surgery on the lung. While working on his doctoral dissertation, he created a model of the complicated forms of acute pneumonia in animals and received a patent. During his time in Novokuznetsk I.Klepikov went from intern to the head of the surgical Department of the Association of surgical clinics and Vice-Director of the Russian State Institute for Post-graduate Medical Studies .
