Lester L Rolf had primary responsibility for all the research hoofed stock on the Philadelphia campus (sheep and swine at this time). This responsibility entailed monitoring animals from reception and quarantine, through clinical use and euthanasia: Fielding calls for assistance from investigator teams dealing with physiology, pharmacology, experimental surgery and anesthesia of particular animals models was a common experience of this position. He was tasked, in collaboration with the Associate Director, with revision, updating and systematic organization of all ULAR S.O.P.s. I functioned as the supervisor of the four surgical suites that come under ULAR auspices and was clinically responsible for all postoperative animals while in the recovery/intensive care unit of these suites. He supervised the Senior Veterinary Technician and oversaw the function and utilization of the other veterinary technicians throughout the Philadelphia Campus environment. Some formal instruction was provided to different levels of Veterinary Medical students related to Laboratory Animal Medicine and informal instruction with veterinary medical technicians and husbandry staff were almost everyday occurrences. Cases of unique presentation and/or species were worked up for publication in peer reviewed journals. Approximately, 8 percent of his time was spent in preparation for certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He is currently the Attending Veterinarian for the Haverford College and the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences.

Develop the therapeutic compounds from medicinal nature herbs which have ability to inhibit inflammation; Fundamental impact to human health
Hong Ye is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Louisville. She has a long academic history as a structural biologist and a biochemist, determined various macromolecular structures on proteins, protein/peptide complexes and protein/protein complexes which related to either DNA replication, recombination and repair process. She also dissected the protein functions in addition to determining structures. After she puts her focus on identification and characterization of the active compounds from the medicinal herbs, she has established that the medicinal AO herbal extract had the inhibition activity on inflammation by mouse model. In addition, she founds this herbal extract were able to inhibit the pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNFα, and to promote the activity of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The project we proposed here will further separate the herbal extract to individual compounds and dissect the function of each compound. The proposed studies have the potential to develop into a novel treatment for inflammation related diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis. As the PI, she will oversee all aspects including experiment design, ingredient purification, crystallization and structure determination.
