Written by Abdul Rahman Mohamed, Lee Keat Teong and Irvan Dahlan, the atmosphere is the most important source of humanity. The balance in its use and conservation places its position at a very high level of interest in society. The technology that has developed manpower to date, whether the electrical system, industrial or transport activity proved to have threatened the environment especially atmospheric environment. Therefore, air pollution monitoring and control technology is indispensable, and is being actively developed. Knowledge of pollutants, either naturally or man-made, must be explored together with the latest development of new technologies in this field. Hence, this desire is the main driver of the writing of this book; which not only explains engineering principles in air pollution control, but also describes humanitarian issues, ecosystems and the environment.
Students in the field of air pollution engineering and the environment interested in understanding the source of air pollution and engineering principles to monitor or control air pollution will find this book also provides a solid foundation of knowledge in this field. This book can also be used as reference for engineers involved in air pollution control. Clear and organized writing also facilitates readers to understand the content described without the need for third party assistance, especially for readers who have no basic knowledge of air pollution. Website references are used to discuss the appropriate topics. This site's reference may not be the latest because the addition or change of the website is very fast. However, the references on the website are one of the most important steps in acquiring the latest knowledge. The reader who shows us the spelling mistakes, the numbering mistakes or any mistakes in this book is highly appreciated by the author. The error should be corrected in the next edition.
Air pollution is defined as the presence of pollutants, such as dust, gas, odor and smoke in the atmosphere. The quantity, nature and duration of the substance can negatively affect humans, plants and animals and damage property. Oxygen or nitrogen gas, for example non-toxic and non-polluting, even has high quantities of air. Carbon monoxide, on the other hand, is very harmful to humans, though at very low concentrations. Air pollution is not a new phenomenon. Air pollution caused by human activity begins from human beings using the fire. But it was not serious until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century in Europe after the creation of a steam engine by James Watt. The recession of air quality due to air pollution has led to legislation and air pollution control introduced widely after the Second World War. After 1945, awareness of the problem of air pollution gradually increased, especially in developed countries.
