Shoulder and Elbow; Spine; Foot and Ankle; Basic Science/PRP/BMAC/3D Bio-Fabrication

Profile:
Orthopaedic trauma has always been part of George’s practice. During his core training he gained significant exposure to trauma working in a level 1 trauma centre. His training unit was one of the first to practice damage control orthopedics in Greece and one of the leading hospitals in IM nailing and external fixator application. During this period he completed Orthofix courses in Greece and in Italy and he participated in IM nailing courses and meetings; including the Küntscher Society Meeting were he presented a paper about primary nailing for open tibia fractures. As part of his core training he had 1 year of training in paediatric orthopaedics, both elective and trauma. Following his CCT I worked for 2 years as locum consultant in Greece and consolidated his trauma experience. General Hospital Aigio had an Ilizarov centre where he had the opportunity to be trained in the application of Ilizarov devices. His first job in the UK, at Spinal Centre in Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, gave me exposure to all types of spine problems, elective and trauma. Working for 18 months as Specialty Doctor gave me the opportunity to understand the trauma needs and requirements of NHS. During this period he had 2-3 fracture clinics per week, one trauma list every week and 1:8 weekends he had his weekend all-day trauma lists. Finally, during his RSU fellowship he had an ad hoc trauma/NOF list and performed upper limb trauma cases in his fellow lists. Upper limb surgery Through out his career he have always had an interest in upper limb surgery. As a resident he worked with Mr Apergis, hand specialist and author of the book Fracture- Dislocations of the Wrist, published by Springer. The lead consultant of our hospital was Mr Maris a shoulder surgeon who trained and worked as a consultant in Nottingham. Under their supervision he was trained in upper limb trauma and shoulder joint replacement surgery. In 2010 after completing my CCT he had the opportunity to spend 1 year as a research shoulder arthroscopy fellow with Mr Antonogiannakis and he participated in more than 350 shoulder procedures. In his Locum Consultant posts he had upper limb trauma lists and performed elective shoulder surgery, arthroscopic and open, including joint arthroplasty. During the period he worked as Specialty Doctor in Burton on Trent he had the chance to significantly improve his experience in upper limb surgery and general orthopaedic trauma. He had the fortune to be trained by Mr Hamlet both in elbow and shoulder surgery and he had my independent trauma lists. Often he assisted Mr Kitsis in wrist and hand cases. In August 2015 he completed the Reading Shoulder Unit (RSU) Fellowship and under the guidance of Professor Levy he made a leap in his experience in Shoulder and Elbow surgery. During his fellowship he had three to four “one- stop” shoulder clinics every week and two independent fellow operating lists both in the Royal Berkshire and the Berkshire Independent Hospitals. Also, two or three days per week, he operated with Prof Levy gaining experience and improving his skills under his direct teaching and guidance. When he had the opportunity he worked with Mr Sforza, Mr Narvani and Mr Bruguera further increasing my exposure to different surgical techniques. RSU is a referral centre for complex shoulder problems. During his fellowship he had the opportunity to be involved in difficult shoulder replacement revision cases, management of complex proximal humerus trauma, thoracoscapular fusion for Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy and treatment of massive/large cuff tears and recurrent instability. Since August 2015 he started to work as senior fellow in arthroscopy/ arthroplasty at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. He felt that this post will help him increase his abilities and knowledge in complex upper limb surgery. Simultaneously, in order to continue advancing his experience in shoulder surgery, He participated in the clinical activities of the Reading Shoulder Unit. He have either clinics or NHS choose and book lists at the Berkshire Independent Hospital depending on the needs of the Unit.

I managed to persuade the management to fund this ‘Blackburn, Upper Limb service’ and recruited a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of clinical specialists/ extended role practitioners and trained them to be specialist professionals. I produced the job plans for each member and the rota with which I reduced the out-patient waits from 38 weeks to less than 6 weeks wait to see the consultant and less than 1 week wait to see the clinical specialists in the Upper Limb service. The multi-disciplinary approach with additional clinical specialists/extended role practitioners, started in Sept. 2001. • Since then this organisation and my practice development has been accepted and mirrored by other NHS Trusts and PCTs. • I started the Orthopaedic Research multi-disciplinary group in Dec.1999. A number of research topics and methodology have been discussed. This group also acts as the sounding board for quality of care issues and clinical governance in Orthopaedics. • I was involved in the set up of the first Practice Development Unit in Orthopaedics, with S/N Gill Bates, in UK (1999). • CHARITY  Started the registered charity in Orthopaedics in ELHT - ‘Blackburn Orthopaedic Research fund’.  Chaired the 1st and the only Wishbone walk held in Blackburn in 1999 and raised £18,000,00 for the BOA & Wishbone trust.  Ran the Flora London Marathon in 2008 (the centenary year) to raise £2,240.00 for the BOA research on Joints. Twenty percent of elective surgery involves Knee Arthroscopic surgery and primary joint replacements. Eighty percent of my surgical procedures are day case procedures. All Upper-limb surgery i.e. Shoulder, Elbow & hand surgery, under my instruction is assessed for Outcomes and measured with ‘Internationally validated outcome measures’- DASH scores, Constants & Murley, Rowes scores.
