Saumen Kumar Maitra

Visva-Bharati University
India View Profile

Research Interest:
Melatonin; Pineal Gland; Photoperiod; Circadian Rhythm; Circannual Rhythm; Reproductive Cycles; Testis; Ovary; Testosterone Congeners

Profile:
Saumen Kumar Maitra, Ph D, Professor & Former Head, Department of Zoology, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India. Professor Maitra’s credit lies in the novel contribution for understanding the role of pineal and its hormone melatonin in photo-regulation of vertebrate reproduction. His research group discovered dynamics of regulatory mechanism of photoreceptor proteins and melatonin rhythm generating system in the fish pineal. Novelty of his science is to provide first evidence of extra-hypothalamic actions of melatonin on any fish oocytes. Localization and rhythmic profiles of melatonin receptors on fish ovary in demonstrating direct actions of melatonin on fish ovary is a new report. This knowledge will eventually generate interest to re-look for other vertebrates, including mammals, in understanding the role of melatonin in reproductive regulation. Another novelty of his research is to add a new dimension to meiotic cell cycle of oocytes where melatonin has been shown to modulate the action of maturation-inducing hormone (MIH) in activating cyclin dependant kinase Cdk1 through its complex with cyclin B during G to M transition. Collectively, Professor Maitra’s research generated knowledge to explain how photic cue as an important component of environment can play a critical regulatory role depending on its quantum of availability through photoreceptors and/or melatonin and how their enrichment in pineal could be vital for regulation of reproduction.
